Leading up to the 2007 exhibition titled You Are Here, Robin Metcalfe, Director of the Saint Mary’s University Art Gallery, was asked to provide a written synopsis describing his daily travel routes from his home to work at the University as an example of cognitive mapping where individuals provide descriptions of specific social/geographic territories. As a variation on envelope-based projects such as Pressure Today and You Are Here, Home / Work (2007) superimposes a mapped water colour representation of the territories described in Metcalfe’s journeys onto a field of used envelopes addressed to him at home or work.
